Some people are naturally risk-averse, while others seek it vicariously! Ultimately, it comes down to finding that sweet spot where you are a little uncomfortable (growth), but not in over in your head. Here are four things that helped me make some tough career decisions:
1. Will this help you grow?
Subjective of course, but you need to look at the opportunity, not the job itself. Will this make you grow as a person, a professional? Will this force you to leave your comfort zone and make new friends, challenge yourself as an individual and start over? Or is it the easy route where you can make money and not push yourself?
2. Long-term Mindset
Does this opportunity put you on the right path to where you’re looking to go? Sometimes it’s not easy, nor favorable, to plan too deeply into your career path. Things change. Generally, it makes sense to have some sort of direction in where you’re headed though. It is important to keep in mind your goals and ambitions as you make your journey in sports.
3. Fulfillment
One of the most important aspects of any job is that you look forward to going to work most of the time. Is what you’re doing making an impact? Do you actually enjoy it? Working many home games and/or events even though it might be a good opportunity could wear you down tremendously if you don’t enjoy what you are doing.
4. Does it make sense?
At the end of the day, you need to take the baselines in to account. Are the financial aspects there? Can you afford to take that minimum wage Inside Sales job across the country, or would it make more sense to stick close to home for a bit? Are you able to bring your family with you? Is the city you’re moving to affordable, or do you need to live below your means?
These are a few of the items to consider when starting in sports or considering a new role. These were all part of my decision-making process, and it has worked out well. Hope this helps in your future decision-making too!
